Night Terrors

Not Dreaming

As you approach the door, your fingers on the cold iron
Your breath held, your eyes fixed upon the window
Quarter moon, a ghost light behind, a shroud of cloud
The creatures calling to you, as they surround the house
You step into the yard and see, the dark stumps of trees
That whisper in their sleep as you silently pass them by
You follow a path to the lake, where you walk through water
That comes up to your waist, and is black with beetles
And they swim away from you, like so many stars.
