One of the hottest jokes on Twitter circa March 2019, what does “Mercury in retrograde” really mean? Why is it such a convenient excuse, and how can I make this about me?

Now, don’t freak out- but we have our third and final Mercury retrograde period of 2021 coming up. The dates are September 27th- October 17th, 2021. Actually, we’re lucky this year as some years have four Mercury retrogrades. When a planet goes “retrograde” it means that it appears as if it is moving backwards in its orbit. This in turn has an effect on the Mercury-ruled areas of life on Earth. Those areas include communication, daily expression, our thought process, and even some lesser-known ones like travel and mail. You can expect disruptions in these areas of our lives during this time period.

So what does it mean this time around?

During this specific time period, Mercury retrograde falls in the Venus-ruled Libra. This is good news, Mercury likes being in the air signs, and Libra is the most pleasant. This means it’s time to double down on charm and tact. The nicer we are in our daily communications, the less likely they are to be messed with by the retrograde. We have to work extra hard during this time.

So why is retrograde a good excuse?

Since Mercury retrograde commonly leads to miscommunications, it is convenient to blame the stars for any faux pas or backslides (ahem, don’t text your ex.) It’s not a good time for a launch of a new product or company (or even a “soft launch” of a new bf). It IS a good time to reflect on our values, friendships, and commitments.

How can I make this about me?

On a normal day, our Mercury sign can get us into trouble; not everyone we interact with will have a compatible communication style. During retrograde, this can be magnified. To know how the retrograde will affect us, we should start by finding where Libra falls in our birth chart, this is where the transit will be happening. Libra in your first house: This is a time to reflect on SELF. This is a realistic time to make small changes to your appearance- a haircut or new color, or a new fashion trend can help you feel brand new.

Libra in your second house: What do you value? This is a good time to let go of possessions that you barely use. Donate them to goodwill, or (more likely) sell them on Facebook Marketplace and get some $ for it.

Libra in your third house: give your siblings a call, mow your neighbor’s lawn, focus on those connections that are close to home, be sure to approach these with positive energy.

Libra in your fourth house: Call your mom. Look at old pictures. Your family may appreciate digging up some fond family memories, skip over any negative memories.

Libra in your fifth house: Revisit any creative endeavors that you gave up on because they weren’t “perfect”. New inspiration might strike.

Libra in your sixth house: Been thinking about going to the gym again or trying out a new fitness routine? Now’s the time.

Libra in your seventh house: This is a delicate one. Be sure to fully read any contracts you plan to sign, and yes that includes Terms & Conditions. Try not to be harsh in your romantic relationships.

Libra in your eighth house: Are you keeping any secrets? Don’t worry it’s not time to divulge them just yet.

Libra in your ninth house: Dreaming of spontaneity? Thinking of a Master’s Degree or a trip abroad? Go ahead and plan, but wait until you have something concrete before you tell people.

Libra in your tenth house: This is a good time to reconsider your public image. It may be time for a social media makeover.

Libra in your eleventh house: Been thinking about joining a new social group? Go for it! Be sure to be your naturally charming self- but don’t stretch yourself too thin.

Libra in your twelfth house: Focus on your spiritual side. Try out meditating. Recognize that closure, although may be important, will now always be awarded.

This should give a general idea of how the retrograde will manifest in you. Although there are many planets at play that can affect our transits, for a more specific reading, you’ll need to talk to an astrologer.
