Becoming A UX Designer

I have always been fascinated by the need to be meticulous in all I do and doing it as a team. It has buoyed my advancement as I applied it to work and life. In my career as a HR manager, I used my strengths, inclusive of my attention to detail, my honed project management skills and optimal investments in the field, to churn out impressive performances both for myself and my team. I believe in changing the world and I now want to do that through a career in Tech. I want to bring my energy and skill and challenge myself as a problem solver in the tech world.

I started off with Software Engineering, it was very interesting. I was amazed at how much I could achieve with a combination of HTML, CSS and JavaScript. Then, I progressed to UX Design and it felt like my tech career should have started the other way round. I have learnt so much in a short time, yet it feels like I haven’t scratched the surface.

Grasping the concept behind sketching or wireframing different patterns was a bit daunting at first. I found this exhausting when I could just sketch one perfect screen and be done with. However, I have come to appreciate that this provides a skeleton from which the functionality of the design is improved.

Importantly, I now understand the significance of variations, enhancements and the creativity behind it all. This has stimulated my attentive nature, highlighted the need for iterations and illustrating how productive I can be.

They say to know where you are going, you need to know where you’re coming from. This underscores the essence of Journey Mapping, Storyboard and all things that involve stories. As much as I am inclined to be a good listener, my project management nature compels me to take a bird’s eye view and chart a course from start to finish for accountability and evaluation.

Storytelling is an essential skill for UX designers to build a great sitemap. You create a unique user experience, charting a friendly user flow path. This emphasizes the user journey in its entirety, aiding the definition of my design decision. Certainly a tool I want to harness.

Formerly as a HR manager, I have handled lots of reports and presentations. In the tech world, I have been exposed to a whole new dimension of presentations. I am excited about neoteric opportunities and techniques to express my designs from the mood board to reality. Learning about the processes for presentations has been challenging but it is a task I can overcome.

With progress, I am more expressive, carrying my audience and articulately communicating the purpose of the slides. I am mastering the art of imparting the objectives of my slides seamlessly.

Constructive criticism is an important aspect of improving a person’s performance. I have been on both sides of the table and I understand that this is vital. All opinions are important and have to be evaluated, emphasizing the need for teamwork and progression.

It is my understanding that the best approach to criticism is an open mind with a view to considering the critic’s perspective and employing a better method to solve the problem.

The journey so far in the tech world has been enlightening. Applying my skills in the new world has both been challenging as it is exciting. The need for iteration showcases the essence of developing the backend to improve functionality. Linking the sitemaps and user interface to deliver a wonderful user experience. While the learning curve is a continuous process, I am enthusiastic and motivated to be the best I can be in the field of UX Design.
