It Has Been Awhile

I have not the strength to sit here
in front of this glib void
and take a garden rake
to my dishevelled past

there is little there of worth
my life a long stretched canvas
of mediocrity and missed
luncheons along scenic rivers

while I sat miserable
in the stench of my own
inabilities, to move, to surge, to generate
just stewing in my fears and dreads

fuck it
instead I will
tell you all
of a friend

Angle Hangle who likes to dangle
off the edge of stray thoughts
has a pair of gold shears with which to mangle
and cut into meaningful connections

that thought you might have had, almost had
which would have taken you up and over
yourself and your innate limitations
well sir that it never came to pass

that, that is the handiwork
of none other than
dear Mr Hangle
Angle to his friends

he fell through my mind like a stone
nothing, he laughed clapping me on the shoulder
not a single thing of note to latch onto
why if the world had only people like you in it

I’d go wanting for employment
Angle likes to tell me of his successes
how he kept certain people you’ve never heard of
from becoming people you would have

What of all the notables in the world at large
Angle Hangle makes a noise like a strangle
but it is all for show, a pantomime
he is as unkillable as dirt

I simply cannot be everywhere
one man I am
just one
but one who gets things done

we would be astride the stars
by now, my good man
he laughs with a wink
if I hadn’t been here all along

snipping and snapping
ripping and tearing
shearing and shaving
all of you into position
