The Flatiron School

Hi, My name is Christina and I am a student at Flatiron School.

No, no, no, no, no.

Let me try that again.

Hi,

My name is Christina. I’m a musician, an artist, a teacher, a fashion enthusiast, a language enthusiast, and a student at Flatiron School.

If you are reading this blog right now, you are me about 3 months ago trying to do my research on a Software Engineering Bootcamp program.

3 months ago, I really didn’t know what I was getting myself into. I mean, I thought I knew what I was getting myself into but I really didn’t until I started the program.

Here is why.

To be very honest, I wanted a career switch and was looking for something that is creative that paid a lot of money. My boyfriend, being a backend developer, taught me a little bit about programming and it sparked my interest.

Then I started my research and Flatiron School seemed like the best choice. Flatiron School offers 15 weeks of the curriculum, unlike other Bootcamps that offers 12 weeks. Also, all of the information was very organized and straightforward within their website and compared to the other programs their career service after the program seemed really superb.

I started my pre Bootcamp work and was happy with the progress I was making.

After completing up to the Deli Counter Lab I had my first interview. I didn’t pass it the first time so I prepared for the second interview and passed. I was really happy that I got accepted.

The issue for me started when I got my pre-work. I had a week before the class started to complete my “pre-work”. I was so set on the date that I wanted to start and I rushed through them. This was not a great choice.

If you are reading this blog right now, and are thinking about doing the Software Engineering Bootcamp here at Flatiron, really spend time on all the pre Bootcamp and the pre-work before your cohort starts.

Though I’m really enjoying my time here and learning all the new materials, I really wish that I had spent more time studying before my cohort started.

I had picked a date to start and I did the bare minimum to start on that day. I didn’t want to wait too long before starting the class and didn’t give myself enough time to study everything that was given. I wanted to start as soon as I can.

Don’t do what I did.

Spend as much time possible before starting with a cohort. Most of the people in my cohort spent more than a month studying the materials, some even half a year. I would say spend at least a good 3 months studying the materials that are offered online. This will really help when you start your classes here.

I’m always on an emotional roller coaster because I understand one thing and then when we go through new material I feel like I’m back to zero.

The people in my cohort who spent more time doing all the pre-work are suick to comprehend the new materials we are presented with. They seem more on top of the materials than those who didn’t.

If you are one of those people like me with no background in programming whatsoever, take as much time to prepare. You’ll have a blast with this program for sure. Also, all the staff members are so supportive and want you to succeed.

Just spend that extra time before you start the program! :)
