Midnight Cats

There are cats in the street seemingly tearing each others intestines out, crying out to god for mercy. A turf war is nothing short of vile. The wretched rain intensifies the ambience of screams. Cats on roofs and in gardens tear up what’s left of my pantsies and african violets. The little fuckers leave behind shit and piss in my flowerbeds as a reminder that no matter how much I try my garden is still a pile of shit. Perhaps a reflection of me but I may be projecting.

In the morning I wake up and drink the same stale coffee we sell at the coffee shop where I work, Squash. We get a free kilo of ground coffee to make up for shit management and crap pay. A grim blanket of clouds covers the sky. No chance of summer returning. Another day of serving tea to commuters who forget that the person behind the till is not a robot. Would it kill you to use manners? I suppose it could kill me. When someone steps out of the norm, usually a tourist or someone from way up North, I shudder and feel the skin on my back dampen with sweat while my ass shivers and tightens like I need a great big poo. Today a man in chinos and a button up said good morning. He wore a cashmere scarf and a tweed overcoat which he draped over his very average arm as he stood before me at the till. He said he was from San Francisco. I believe him. His accent made me fear for my life and I liked it. Maybe I imagined it but it felt like he was coming onto me. It’s been a good while since someone’s been below me and I am a needy girl. He was tall and stocky which is to me how a lover should look. I knew I would dream of him tonight. In the dead of night, with the cats in howls and the rain alight. I would think of him when I heard the cats.
